In simple terms, the hub brings together high-performance computing, digital engineering, simulation and advanced analysis needed to design and develop modern nuclear power plants.

Why Does India Need a Facility Like DARSHAN?

Designing a nuclear reactor involves thousands of interconnected systems and components. Engineers need to study how these systems behave under normal operating conditions as well as different accident and safety scenarios.

Modern computer-based engineering allows many of these studies to be performed through digital models and simulations before physical construction begins. DARSHAN Hub is intended to provide this high-end computational and engineering capability for India’s indigenous advanced reactor programmes.

What Will the DARSHAN Hub Do?

Facility will support several areas of advanced nuclear engineering:

1. 3D Plant Engineering – Engineers can create detailed three-dimensional digital models of plant systems, structures and equipment.

2. Digital Simulation – Computer simulations can be used to study reactor and plant behaviour under different operating conditions.

3. High-End Analysis – High-performance computing can support complex engineering calculations and analyses that require substantial computational power.

4. Advanced Reactor Design – The capabilities can support engineering activities associated with India’s next-generation reactor technologies.

5. SMR Development – The hub will provide engineering and simulation support for indigenous SMRs being developed by NPCIL and BARC.

What Is the Connection with NPCIL and BARC?

India’s nuclear programme has traditionally relied heavily on indigenous research, reactor technology development and engineering capabilities developed through organisations such as BARC and NPCIL.

DARSHAN Hub adds a dedicated high-end digital engineering capability to this ecosystem. BARC brings extensive nuclear research and technology-development expertise, while NPCIL has decades of experience in designing, constructing and operating nuclear power plants. Hub can help bring advanced computational and engineering capabilities together in support of future reactor technologies.

Is DARSHAN a Reactor?

No. DARSHAN Hub is not a nuclear reactor and does not generate electricity. It is an engineering, simulation and high-performance computing facility that supports the development and analysis of nuclear reactor technologies.

A simple way to understand it is: Reactor technology – Digital modelling – Simulation – Engineering analysis – Design development – Physical reactor. DARSHAN sits primarily in the digital engineering and analysis part of this process.

Why Is This Important for SMRs?

SMRs are being developed around the world with an increasing emphasis on standardisation, modular construction, digital engineering and advanced design methods. For India, developing these capabilities domestically can help strengthen the engineering base required for its emerging SMR programme.

Importance of the DARSHAN Hub therefore goes beyond a single facility. It represents the growing role of computational engineering and digital technologies in India’s nuclear technology development.

The Bigger Picture

India is expanding its focus from conventional nuclear power technologies towards advanced reactors and SMRs. This requires not only reactor technology but also a wider ecosystem of engineering, manufacturing, simulation, software, safety analysis and skilled professionals.

The DARSHAN Hub is one part of this emerging ecosystem. Its significance lies in strengthening India’s ability to use advanced digital engineering and high-end computational analysis in the development of indigenous next-generation nuclear technologies.

In simple sentence DARSHAN Hub is India’s advanced digital engineering and simulation platform for supporting the development of next-generation nuclear reactors, including indigenous SMRs.
