Gujarat has taken a new step towards exploring future nuclear power development, with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to identify suitable sites for new Nuclear Power Projects (NPPs) in the state.
MoU was signed on 1 October 2026, marking the beginning of a collaborative process to explore Gujarat’s potential for hosting additional nuclear power capacity. Agreement provides a framework for discussions, sharing of relevant information, identification of potential sites and assessment of their technical suitability for nuclear power development. MoU was signed in the presence of Rushikesh Patel, Minister of Energy & Petrochemicals, Panchayat & Rural Housing, and Legislative & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Gujarat.
Ashwini Kumar, Principal Secretary, Energy & Petrochemicals Department, Government of Gujarat and Chairman, GSECL, signed the MoU on behalf of GSECL. V. Rajesh, Chairman & Managing Director, NPCIL, signed on behalf of NPCIL.
Signing took place in the presence of P.S. Karthigeyan, Joint Secretary (Power & ER), Department of Atomic Energy, along with senior officials from GSECL and NPCIL.
Exploring Gujarat’s Nuclear Potential
Collaboration does not represent the announcement of a specific nuclear power plant or project location. Instead, it establishes a framework for exploring and assessing potential sites in Gujarat. Site selection is an important early stage in nuclear power development, requiring detailed assessment of technical and site-related parameters before a project can move forward.
For Gujarat, the initiative opens a new avenue to examine how the state could contribute to India’s expanding nuclear energy programme.
Nuclear Power and India’s Energy Transition
India is pursuing a larger role for nuclear power as part of its long-term energy strategy. Nuclear generation can provide firm, low-carbon electricity while supporting energy security and the broader transition towards a lower-carbon power system.
The NPCIL-GSECL collaboration aligns with the wider national objectives of strengthening energy security, supporting sustainable development and contributing to India’s net-zero emissions target by 2070.
For Gujarat, the MoU marks the start of a new phase of exploration. A new possibility for Gujarat. A new step in India’s nuclear energy journey.
